When the Falcons traded for Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel, they got a playmaking ballhawk. They got a player whose superb instincts have helped him notch 45 career interceptions. They got a player who has two Super Bowl rings.
Most importantly, the Falcons got a player with swagger. Besides animated linebacker Sean Weatherspoon, the Falcons defense is filled with a bunch of “nice guys.” Nice guys who won’t impose their will on the opposing offense. Nice guys who will help players up from the opposing offense.
A bunch of nice guys.
Samuel’s arrival changes this persona of the Falcons defense. “We mean now,” he proclaims.
Both sides of the ball will benefit from Samuel’s swagger. His trash-talking brings a much-needed attitude to the defense and that attitude is likely to rub off on the offense.
I’m not saying the Falcons will win the Super Bowl based solely off Samuel’s attitude. However, this will be the type of team Falcons fans have wanted for a long time.
