Peter King: 5,000 Passing Yards for Matt Ryan “Very Realistic”

Taken from Peter King’s blog on SI.com:

Handcuffs are off Matt Ryan. He’ll have the ability to throw for some ridiculous numbers (5,000 yards is very realistic) with new coordinator Dirk Koetter sending Julio Jones flying deep.

As a guy who enjoys watching high-powered offenses go back and forth, I’d be slightly annoyed if Ryan managed to throw for 5,000 yards. Last year was a bit of an anomaly because of the lockout; offenses were otherworldly for much of the season. Three quarterbacks (Tom Brady, Drew Brees, and Matt Stafford) managed to pass for 5,000 yards, and Eli Manning came 67 yards shy of the 5,000 mark. Prior to last season, there were only two quarterbacks who had passed for over 5,000 yards: Drew Brees and Dan Marino.

I doubt offenses are going to go crazy this year. Defenses will be more stout. However, Ryan certainly has the weapons to help him go over 5,000 yards. King already highlighted Jones, but factor him along with Roddy White, Tony Gonzalez, and Harry Douglas, and you’ve got some of the best weapons in the league. It wouldn’t be overly surprising if Ryan managed to eclipse the 5,000-yard mark.
