Garrett Reynolds Listed As Starting Right Guard

The Falcons released their unofficial depth chart on Tuesday, and Garrett Reynolds is listed as the starting right guard. Also of note: Luke McCown is listed as the backup quarterback to Matt Ryan, and Brent Grimes and Dunta Robinson are the starting cornerbacks.

It should be noted this depth chart is unofficial; head coach Mike Smith has gone on record to say the starters won’t be decided until Sunday.

With all that said, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see Reynolds back in the starting lineup. During the preseason, he played like a guy who’d lost his job last year. He shored up his pass blocking, proving players can get better. Rookie Peter Konz played well, too.

I’m a little miffed by McCown usurping the immediate backup spot to Ryan from Dominique Davis. I figured Davis’ play in the preseason would supplant him as the backup, but the coaching staff is apparently more comfortable with a veteran in that position. The fact McCown has spent a few years with offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter certainly helped.

I wouldn’t read much into Robinson being listed as the starting right cornerback; he’s a much better tackler than Asante Samuel, making him a more plausible candidate for running downs. Also, the Falcons will be in the nickel defense a lot; essentially, all three cornerbacks qualify as “starters.”

Robinson allegedly had a great training camp. In both 2010 and 2011, he injured his hamstring. This year, he was healthy for the entire offseason.
