Atlanta Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes is out for the year with a torn Achilles. He will be placed on injured reserve.
Grimes left Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs late in the fourth quarter with what looked to be a calf injury at the time. The severity of the injury was unknown at the time.
Grimes signed a $10.3 million franchise tender in April, so he isn’t signed beyond this year. It’s unclear as to whether or not the Falcons will attempt to re-sign him.
The nickelback job will be between Dominique Franks and Christopher Owens. Samuel is likely to take over the left cornerback spot.
This is a huge blow. The Falcons’ secondary that was supposed to consist of Grimes, Dunta Robinson, and Asante Samuel is over after just a single game. The Falcons’ decisive victory yesterday has been dampened with the loss of Grimes.
