Falcons Could Lose Offensive Coordinator Dirk Koetter

The Atlanta Falcons’ decision to hire the former Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator was questioned by many. Dirk Koetter’s offense was one of the league’s worst, but that was evidently in large part to the lack of talent.

After turning the Falcons into one of the league’s best offenses and helping Matt Ryan turn in his best season to date, Koetter has become a hot commodity.

The offensive coordinator is reportedly drawing interest from the Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, and Philadelphia Eagles. Koetter is set to interview with the Chiefs on Tuesday.

It would be a shame to see Koetter go. With that said, the Falcons have loads of talent on offense, and any decent coordinator should be able to come in and have success.

Head coach Mike Smith said the Atlanta Falcons (13-3) were playing to win this game. True to his word, the starters played the entire game and lost 22-17 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-9).

But for the majority of the game, it didn’t look like the Falcons were playing to win at all. At halftime, Atlanta was down 13-3 and never fully recovered.

Matt Ryan set an Atlanta Falcons franchise record for most touchdown passes (32) in a season.

The record of 31 touchdown passes was set by Steve Bartkowski in 1980.

Ryan found wide receiver Harry Douglas from seven yards out in the fourth quarter.

The touchdown was Douglas’ first on the year.

Falcons Injury Report: Moore, Owens Out

The Atlanta Falcons Piedmont Healthcare Injury Report published on Friday lists two players as out for Sunday’s match-up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers: safety William Moore (hamstring) and cornerback Chris Owens (hamstring).

Four players are questionable: defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux (ribs), defensive end Cliff Matthews (hamstring), defensive tackle Corey Peters (knee), and wide receiver Roddy White (knee).

Babineaux and Peters both were limited in practice. After missing the first two practices, Matthews was limited in Friday’s practice.

White didn’t practice all week. I’d be surprised if he didn’t play, though.

Atlanta Falcons Vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Preview

The Week 17 match-up between the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers carries no playoff implications for either team.

Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has been named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week.

Ryan led the Falcons to their 13th win of the season, defeating  the Detroit Lions last week. He completed 25 of 32 passes for 279 yards and four touchdowns. It was the third time in Ryan’s career he’s thrown for four touchdowns in a game.

Atlanta Falcons strong safety William Moore will miss his fourth straight game this Sunday.

Moore has been nursing a hamstring injury.

The Falcons host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in a game that holds no implications for either teams. Atlanta will have a bye before playing in the divisional round of the playoffs, so Moore should be available for that game.

Falcons Sending Three to Pro Bowl

Three Atlanta Falcons have been voted to the Pro Bowl: quarterback Matt Ryan, tight end Tony Gonzalez, and wide receiver Julio Jones.

Ryan has posted career numbers in yards, touchdowns, and passer rating thus far. He has thrown for 4,481 yards, 31 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions on 394 of 571 (69.0 percent) passing.

The 36-year-old Gonzalez has played at a high level despite his age. He has 88 receptions for 889 yards and 8 touchdowns.

Jones is building upon a good rookie campaign with a great sophomore showing. The second-year receiver has totaled 76 receptions, 1,142 yards, and 10 touchdowns. All of Jones’ numbers are up from last year.

When it comes to snubs, you have to look at John Abraham, Thomas DeCoud, and Roddy White. Abraham has 10 sacks and six forced fumbles; DeCoud has six interceptions on the year and has been one of the best safeties in the league; White has 87 catches for 1,309 yards and seven touchdowns. How those three weren’t selected to the Pro Bowl is baffling.

A Closer Look at the Falcons Pass Defense

As of Week 16, the Atlanta Falcons allow 243.7 yards per game through the air, which ranks 23rd in the league. It’s not exactly an ideal ranking for a playoff team with Super Bowl aspirations, but numbers often fail to show the entire story. Sometimes, you have to dig a little deeper to get a more accurate picture.
