The Atlanta Falcons have released Brian Banks, the recently exonerated linebacker who spent five years in jail for a rape he didn’t commit.

You’re not human if you weren’t pulling for Banks but the writing was on the wall when he appeared scarcely in the four preseason games. However, as the tweet above from Jay Glazer says, the Falcons pulled an extremely classy move by offering him some sort of position with the team. Quite frankly, Banks deserves it.

Also among the cuts: G Theo Goins, DT Neal Huynh, CB Terrence Johnson, S Charles Mitchell, DT Micanor Regis, T Alec Savoie, LB Pat Schiller, K Jeremy Shelley, CB Peyton Thompson, and RB Ronnie Wingo.

QB Sean Renfree and TE Andrew Szczerba were both placed on injured reserve.

The Falcons roster currently sits at 62. The team will need to cut down to 53 players by 6:00pm EST today.

Preseason Week 3: Falcons Look Flat in Loss Against Titans

The Atlanta Falcons’ starters looked nothing like they should’ve looked in Saturday’s 27-16 loss against the Tennessee Titans.

If there’s a preseason game to put stock in, it’s the third preseason game because it serves as a dress rehearsal for the regular season. The starters play the first half (and a little into the second half), and it’s the first game coaches actually gameplan for.

The Falcons are expected to be a Super Bowl contender, but Saturday’s game provided nothing but evidence to the contrary.

Atlanta Falcons receiver Roddy White injured his ankle in last week’s 27-23 preseason loss to the Baltimore Ravens.

The Falcons are officially calling it a “minor ankle sprain.”

The receiver left the game in the first quarter and did not return. He will miss the remainder of the preseason and should be ready for Week 1.

White has never missed a game due to injury in his nine-year career.

Preseason Week 1: Falcons Get Rolled by Bengals

In what seems to be a common theme in preseason for the current regime, the Atlanta Falcons were blown out 34-10 by the Cincinnati Bengals in the Georgia Dome.

Before I delve into the positives and negatives of the game, let’s address two points:

1) It’s only preseason. Last preseason, the Falcons went 1-3 and finished the regular season with a 13-3 record and a trip to the NFC Championship Game.

2) The Falcons rarely win in preseason. It’s the status quo.

Also of note: Julio Jones and Sean Weatherspoon both sat out. Jones is nursing a sore hamstring and Weatherspoon has a badly disclocated finger.

Tackle Mike Johnson Suffers Leg Injury in Practice

After releasing veteran Tyson Clabo, the Atlanta Falcons opened up a hole at the right tackle position.

Mike Johnson, who was listed as the top right tackle on the depth chart, suffered a serious leg injury in practice today.  In fact, the injury was so severe, he left the field in an ambulance.

As it turns out, Johnson dislocated his left ankle and fractured his fibula.

Depth issues aside, you hate to see this for Johnson. He had an opportunity to earn a starting spot, and this happens.

Now, it’s Lamar Holmes’ job to lose.

Weatherspoon Has a Badly Dislocated Finger

On Monday, the Atlanta Falcons participated in a joint practice with the Cincinnati Bengals (who are again appearing on HBO’s Hard Knocks – the Falcons had no interest in being in the spotlight).

During the practice, Sean Weatherspoon, who has emerged as the Falcons’ clear leader on defense, dislocated his finger. The good news is Weatherspoon didn’t suffer any broken bones. However, as the article points out, there is little depth at the weakside linebacker position.

Weatherspoon will likely be held out for the first couple of preseason games. Thus far, the Falcons have been lucky with keeping key guys healthy during training camp.

Also of note: Julio Jones didn’t participate in the joint practice. Head coach Mike Smith noted it was “mostly precautionary.”
