The Atlanta Falcons have ruled out three starters for Monday night’s game versus the New York Jets.

Left tackle Sam Baker (knee), middle linebacker Akeem Dent (ankle), and running back Steven Jackson (hamstring) will all miss the game.

Second-year player Lamar Holmes, who lost his starting right tackle spot to Jeremy Trueblood, will start at left tackle for Baker.

Omar Gaither, who was signed just three weeks ago, will fill in for Dent.

As has been the case since Jackson was injured in Week 2, Jacquizz Rodgers and Jason Snelling will look to fill the running back void.

Luckily, the Falcons have the bye week after Monday night’s game, so there’s a chance to get healthy for the rest of the season.

Weatherspoon Ruled Out Again Sunday

The Atlanta Falcons have ruled linebacker Sean Weatherspoon out for Sunday’s match-up against the New Orleans Saints.

Weatherspoon also missed last Sunday’s game versus the Dallas Cowboys with a low ankle sprain suffered in Week 8 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Like last week, Mike Peterson will fill Weatherspoon’s role in the base defense, and Akeem Dent will take over in sub-packages.

Falcons Beat Cowboys 19-13, Move to 8-0

The Atlanta Falcons just keep winning.

The Falcons’ 19-13 victory over the Dallas Cowboys (3-5) on Sunday night marked the fifth time this season they’ve won a game by a touchdown or less. And they won with an automatic Matt Bryant uncharacteristically missing two field goals (he still drilled four of them). And with Matt Ryan failing to throw a touchdown pass for the first time since Week 2 of last season.

Atlanta Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon has been ruled out for Sunday night’s match-up versus the Dallas Cowboys.

Weatherspoon suffered a low ankle sprain while trying to tackle Philadelphia Eagles running back LeSean McCoy in the fourth quarter last Sunday.

Mike Peterson will fill the void left at weakside linebacker when in the base defense, and Akeem Dent will replace Peterson in the nickel.

Preseason Observations Week 3: Falcons at Dolphins

The Atlanta Falcons defeated the Miami Dolphins Friday night by a score of 23-6. The win marked the first preseason victory for the Falcons since 2010.

The third preseason game usually features the starters playing a bit into the second half, so it’s as close to a regular season game as you’ll get. Final score aside, how did the Falcons fare against a bad Dolphins team?

Akeem Dent Returns to Contact Practice, Set to Start Friday

The Falcons second-year middle linebacker Akeem Dent was cleared to return to contact practice Sunday. Dent suffered a concussion in the first preseason game versus the Baltimore Ravens on a special teams play. He will start Friday when the Falcons visit the Miami Dolphins.

Abiding by the league’s strict protocol in dealing with concussions, Dent was held out the second preseason game versus the Cincinnati Bengals last Thursday.

Dent was moved to first on the depth chart after Lofa Tatupu suffered a pectoral injury, effectively ending his season. The Falcons are looking to replace the middle linebacker void left by Curtis Lofton, who opted to become the New Orleans Saints’ middle linebacker.

Because he’s only a second-year player and a first-year starter, Dent needs all the reps he can get. The concussion undoubtedly set him back again; expect to see him on the field a lot in the next two preseason games.

Preseason Observations Week 1: Falcons vs. Ravens

Although the Atlanta Falcons fell to the Baltimore Ravens 31-17, the first-teamers looked sharp. It was everything Falcons fans have wanted to see from this team: an aggressive offense that picks up yardage in chunks and stifling defense that gives the opposing offense nothing.

Now, I know it’s only preseason, but these games do matter; they just don’t count. And thank goodness they don’t count, because the Falcons backups are mighty close to being abysmal. Their horrific performance would have cost the Falcons a win in the regular season.

Linebacker Lofa Tatupu Out For Season

The Falcons have announced middle linebacker Lofa Tatupu is out for the season after suffering a pectoral injury in the weight room last week.

After sitting out last season, Tatupu considered retirement before the Falcons signed him to a two-year, $3.6 million deal in March. He was to compete with Akeem Dent for the open middle linebacker spot vacated by Curtis Lofton.

The Falcons brought back veteran linebacker Mike Peterson to offset the loss of Tatupu.

Falcons Bring Back Linebacker Mike Peterson

The Falcons have signed veteran linebacker Mike Peterson.

After Lofa Tatupu’s pectoral injury, Peterson was the likely free agent for the Falcons to sign. Like last year, Peterson will be in a reserve role; he will serve as the backup middle linebacker to Akeem Dent.

In 2011, Peterson appeared in 15 games and started five. He notched 27 tackles and an interception. Over his 13-year career, Peterson has amassed 1,611 tackles, 21.5 sacks, 19 interceptions, nine forced fumbles, and nine fumble recoveries.
