Filling the Roster Spots: Falcons Sign LBs Chaney and Gaither, FB DiMarco

The Atlanta Falcons were forced to fill three roster spots after injuries ended the seasons of two players (Kroy Biermann and Bradie Ewing) and forced Sean Weatherspoon to be placed on injured reserve-designated to return.

To offset the blows to the linebacking corps, the Falcons signed former Philadelphia Eagles Jamar Chaney and Omar Gaither.

Chaney, a seventh-round pick in 2010, spent three years with the Eagles before being cut after the third game this past preseason. He started a 23 of 44 games, amassing 158 tackles, one sack, three interceptions, and one forced fumble.

Gaither was a fifth-round pick in 2006, and he spent five years with the Eagles. He played with the Carolina Panthers in 2011, and last played for the Oakland Raiders in 2012. He was cut by the Raiders in For his career, Gaither has 334 total tackles, six sacks, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles.

The Falcons also called up fullback Patrick DiMarco from the practice squad to fill the roster spot vacated by Ewing.

Falcons Place Weatherspoon on IR-Designated to Return; Jackson Possibly Out 2-4 Weeks

The Atlanta Falcons have placed linebacker Sean Weatherspoon in injured reserved-designated to return. He’ll be out for at least eight weeks.

Weatherspoon left Sunday’s victory over the St. Louis Rams with an apparent foot sprain and failed to return.

Unfortunately, the injury turned out to be much worse:

And more bad news: Running back Steven Jackson could miss up to four weeks. He left Sunday’s game versus the Rams with a thigh bruise, and like Weatherspoon, he failed to return.

The injuries are piling up for the Falcons. Defensive end Kroy Biermann and fullback Bradie Ewing were both placed on injured reserve yesterday. Atlanta now has three open roster spots to fill.

With Jackson missing some time, expect Matt Ryan to air it out even more. With Roddy White limited with a high ankle sprain, it’ll be up to Julio Jones to carry the load and if his 11-reception, 182-yard performance against the Rams was any indication, he is certainly capable of doing so.

With several Atlanta Falcons being forced to leave the game with injuries, it was up to Julio Jones and Matt Ryan to lead the team to victory over the St. Louis Rams.

Jones matched a career-high in yards with 182 – a total he matched in last season’s NFC Championship game – on 11 receptions, including an 81-yard touchdown; Ryan threw for 374 yards and two touchdowns on 31/41 passing.

Biermann, Ewing Out For Season

The Atlanta Falcons have announced defensive end Kroy Biermann and fullback Bradie Ewing are out for the season.

Biermann tore his Achilles, and Ewing has a separated shoulder in yesterday’s win over the St. Louis Rams.

Although he’s listed as defensive end on the roster, Biermann played multiple roles. He was defensive coordinator Mike Nolan’s do-it-all player,  playing linebacker and even dropping back as a safety in certain packages.

Biermann’s versatility will be sorely missed by the Falcons. He had seven tackles on the season.

For Ewing, it’s the second consecutive year he’s been placed on injured reserve. The fullback missed all of his rookie season last year after getting injured in preseason. On the season, he notched two receptions for 29 yards.

Atlanta’s 2013 Free Agents

With a limited amount of cap space, the Atlanta Falcons are going to be forced to make several decisions in keeping their own.

Leading the list of free agents for the Falcons are tackle Sam Baker, tight end Tony Gonzalez, cornerback Brent Grimes, and safety William Moore.

Falcons Release Polite, Re-sign Cox

The Atlanta Falcons have released fullback Lousaka Polite and re-signed Mike Cox to be the new fullback.

Polite was signed after Bradie Ewing tore his ACL in the preseason. Ewing was drafted in the fifth round (157th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Wisconsin, and he was expected to compete for the starting role.

Cox was released during the final round of cuts in the preseason. He signed with the team in October of last season after former fullback Ovie Mughelli went down with a knee injury.

Falcons Sign TE Chase Coffman and FB Lousaka Polite

The Falcons have signed tight end Chase Coffman and fullback Lousaka Polite on Saturday.

Coffman, a Missouri product, was selected in the third round (98th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. He spent last season the Bengals practice squad. Coffman has totaled three receptions for 30 yards while appearing in six games, all in 2010. In the 2009, he suffered a season-ending ankle injury. While at Missouri, Coffman set an NCAA record for most catches by a tight end at 247. In 2008, he won the John Mackey Award for being the nation’s best tight end.

Polite played his college football at Pittsburgh. He was an undrafted free agent following the 2004 NFL Draft and was signed by the Dallas Cowboys. He spent a total three seasons with the Cowboys. Polite had a short five-game stint with the Chicago Bears in 2007 before spending the next three years with the Miami Dolphins. He appeared in one game with the New England Patriots last year. For his career, Polite has 95 rushing attempts for 296 yards and a touchdown to go along with 41 receptions for 233 yards and one touchdown.

The Falcons have also officially placed rookie fullback Bradie Ewing on injured reserve. Ewing tore his ACL on a special teams play versus the Baltimore Ravens Thursday night.

The team also waived tight end Adam Nissley and punter Dawson Zimmerman.

Rookie Fullback Bradie Ewing Out For Season

The Atlanta Falcons have announced rookie fullback Bradie Ewing is out for the season after tearing his ACL versus the Baltimore Ravens in Thursday night’s preseason game.

With how long Ewing was down, I feared the injury was serious. He was injured on a special teams play in the first half after his foot was caught in the turf. When he was unable to put any weight on his left knee and eventually carted off to the locker room, I knew there was an extremely small chance that the injury would be minor.

Ewing was competing with veteran fullback Mike Cox for the starting job. The Falcons drafted Ewing in the fifth round (157th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Preseason Observations Week 1: Falcons vs. Ravens

Although the Atlanta Falcons fell to the Baltimore Ravens 31-17, the first-teamers looked sharp. It was everything Falcons fans have wanted to see from this team: an aggressive offense that picks up yardage in chunks and stifling defense that gives the opposing offense nothing.

Now, I know it’s only preseason, but these games do matter; they just don’t count. And thank goodness they don’t count, because the Falcons backups are mighty close to being abysmal. Their horrific performance would have cost the Falcons a win in the regular season.
