Falcons Allow Nine Sacks in 21-20 Loss to Panthers

The Atlanta Falcons came up short in their attempt to send Tony Gonzalez off with a win as they fell 21-20 to the Carolina Panthers.

Allowing Matt Ryan to be sacked nine times – four times by defensive end Greg Hardy, who posted a Panthers team single-game record – isn’t exactly a recipe for earning a victory.

The Falcons and the NFC South

Since its inception in 2002, the NFC South has yet to have a back-to-back division champion.

The Atlanta Falcons could very well be the first team in the division to achieve that feat, however.

There’s no question the Falcons boast one of the best offenses in the league. The addition of an extremely capable running back in Steven Jackson combined with an already deadly passing offense led by Matt Ryan means the Falcons will pose a lot of problems for opposing defenses.

The Falcons problems lie on the defensive side of the ball. And really, the team poised to stand in the way of the Falcons winning the division crown for the second year in the row is the New Orleans Saints. Like the Falcons, they have issues on defense.

As it stands now, the Carolina Panthers nor the Tampa Bay Buccaneers don’t appear ready to put up a fight for the division. I understand I’m discounting them, but I’m looking at their respective quarterbacks. Although Cam Newton played well the latter part of the season, he’s yet to show he’s there mentally. For the Panthers to pose a threat, he needs to step up.

Bucs head coach Greg Schiano reportedly isn’t sold on Josh Freeman. And he shouldn’t be. The quarterback had a scorching start to the season, including a five-week stretch in he passed for 13 touchdowns and just one interception. However, he then fizzled out after and went Weeks 12-17 by passing for just six touchdowns to 10 interceptions.

With those two teams eliminated from the race, the Falcons have to worry about the Saints who will be getting head coach Sean Payton back after he was suspended for his role in the bounty program.

The road to another division crown will be tough. The Falcons’ schedule will be considerably more difficult this year. However, if there’s a year for a team to finally get consecutive division championships, it’s this year.

Championship Round Preview: Atlanta Falcons Vs. San Francisco 49ers

It’s the first time the Atlanta Falcons will host an NFC Championship Game, and it’s the second consecutive year the San Francisco 49ers will appear in said game.

Last year, the 49ers hosted the championship game and lost 20-17 to the New York Giants. There’s little doubt San Francisco (12-4-1) will look for that extra nudge to get over the hump and earn themselves a trip to Super Bowl XLVII.

A Rant About the 11-2 Atlanta Falcons

I understand the Atlanta Falcons are 11-2, have already won the NFC South, and are still in the driver’s seat for the top playoff seed.

I understand they’re a good, albeit flawed, team. But for this rant, I’m throwing perspective out the window.

As it stands, there are several areas of this team I’m worried about.

Falcons Falter Against Panthers, Fall to 11-2

The game wasn’t nearly as close as a 30-20 score would indicate.

From the start, the Carolina Panthers (4-9) dominated the Atlanta Falcons (11-2). It was as if the two teams had swapped records.

After winning the coin toss for the first time this season, the Panthers elected to receive and promptly put together an 11-play, 77-yard drive that was capped off with a 25-yard touchdown pass to Greg Olsen.

Atlanta Falcons at Carolina Panthers Preview

The Atlanta Falcons locked up the NFC South last week, but there’s some bad blood brewing between them and the Carolina Panthers.

At least, from the Panthers’ end.

The Falcons won the last match-up in Week 4 by a score of 30-28 after Matt Bryant nailed a 40-yard field goal with 54 seconds left in the game.

Atlanta Falcons at Washington Redskins Preview

The Atlanta Falcons are 4-0 for just the third time in franchise history.

The last time the Falcons rattled off four consecutive wins to start the season was in 2004. Incidentally, 2004 was the last time the Falcons won a playoff game (advancing to the NFC Championship).

The Falcons have already built a large lead over the rest of the NFC South after beating the Carolina Panthers last week. Both the Panthers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are  sitting at 1-3, while the New Orleans Saints have yet to win a game at 0-4.

Roddy White: Matt Ryan Would Never Pout Like Cam Newton

Falcons receiver Roddy White isn’t afraid to say what’s on his mind. He’s made headlines on Twitter, whether it’s talking about gay people or weighing in on Penn State.

This time, the Falcons receiver had something to say about Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

White and fellow receiver Julio Jones sat down for an interview with Michael Irvin that aired on NFL Network’s GameDay Morning. Irvin asked if Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan would ever carry himself in the same defeated demeanor Newton did versus the New York Giants last Thursday (and more recently after the Panthers loss to the Falcons yesterday).

“Never,” said White. “He would never do that. We’ve taken some beatings around here, you know, in my past eight years of being here, and I just never seen that type of behavior. Nah, that’s not acceptable.”

Well, White is definitely right about this one.

Cam Newton turning around in disappointment.

Matt Bryant’s Leg Lifts Falcons Over Panthers, 30-28

Choice words from Matt Ryan. (Big Lead Sports)

The Atlanta Falcons (4-0) defeated the Carolina Panthers (1-3) by a score of 30-28 in an absolute thriller of a game.

Matt Bryant kicked the game winning field goal (40 yards) with just 10 seconds left in the game. The Panthers had one last prayer, but John Abraham sacked Cam Newton to end the game.

The Falcons started the game-winning drive on their own one yard line with 59 seconds left on the clock. Matt Ryan threw a deep bomb to Roddy White on the first play, who made the catch for 59 yards. A defensive pass interference call on Captain Munnerlyn, a seven-yard reception by Tony Gonzalez, and a six-yard reception by Harry Douglas set up the 40-yard field goal for Bryant.
