Not much is going right for the Atlanta Falcons.

At 2-5, they’re on a four-game losing streak. In each consecutive game during that streak, the offense has scored fewer points. All of the Falcons’ five losses have come by double digits.

The Atlanta Falcons have signed free safety Tyrell Johnson in light of Dwight Lowery’s uncertain status after suffering a concussion during Friday’s scrimmage.

Johnson was drafted in the second round (43rd overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings. He started 27 games for them over four years, and last appeared in four games with the Detroit Lions in 2012. For his career, he’s totaled 126 tackles and two interceptions.

To make room for Johnson, the Falcons waived fullback Roosevelt Nix-Jones.

The free safety position is now officially a concern for the Falcons.

Gil Brandt: Julio Jones is Better Than Calvin Johnson

Julio Jones better than Calvin Johnson? Not quite yet. (Gregory Bull)

Julio Jones better than Calvin Johnson? Not quite yet. (Gregory Bull)

Last Wednesday on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Gil Brandt, the Godfather of Football, revealed his preference for Atlanta Falcons receiver Julio Jones over Detroit Lions receiver Calvin Johnson:

“I think if you took 10 people, probably six of the 10 would take Johnson, and four, including myself, would take Julio Jones. I just think the whole package, I like Julio a little bit better than Johnson.”

When the Falcons traded up to draft Jones in the 2011 NFL Draft, Brandt was a fan of the move. He described Jones as a “quality, high-character person.”

Brandt feels Jones’ hands are more reliable and stronger than Johnson’s.

For the 2012 NFL season, Jones had 79 receptions for 1,198 yards and 10 touchdowns; Johnson had 122 receptions for 1,924 yards and five touchdowns. It has to be taken into consideration that Jones also has Roddy White (92 receptions, 1,351 yards, and seven touchdowns) and Tony Gonzalez (93 receptions, 930 yards, and eight touchdowns) to compete with.

With that said, I don’t think you can say Jones is better than Johnson. While I think Jones will certainly get on Johnson’s level in a couple of years, he’s not better currently. If Jones were the Falcons’ only option in the passing game like Johnson is for the Lions, he’d certainly be able to put up monster numbers as well. As it stands now, Julio has a quarterback in Matt Ryan who likes spreading the football around.

Jones is only 24, and he certainly has a bright future in the league.

Falcons Injury Report: Moore, White Questionable

The Atlanta Falcons Piedmont Healthcare Injury Report published on Friday lists four starters as questionable for tonight’s match-up against the Detroit Lions: defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux (ribs), tackle Tyson Clabo (thigh), safety William Moore (hamstring), and wide receiver Roddy White (knee). Also listed as questionable are defensive end Cliff Matthews and cornerback Chris Owens – both are dealing with hamstring injuries.

Wide receiver Harry Douglas is listed as probable.

Matthews and Moore failed to practice all week. If Moore is unable to go, it will be the third consecutive game he’s missed.

The remaining players participated in practice and are likely to be available for tonight.

Atlanta Falcons at Detroit Lions Preview

Saturday night’s match-up features two teams going in opposite directions.

The Atlanta Falcons (12-2) are coming off a huge blowout victory over the New York Giants. On the other hand, the Detroit Lions (4-10) were blown out by the Arizona Cardinals.

The Lions are currently on a six-game skid and clearly have no shot at the playoffs. Thus, their focus has shifted to helping Calvin Johnson break Jerry Rice’s record for receiving yards in a season.
