Another episode of Hard Knocks means we’re that much closer to the regular season.

The first few minutes of the third episode of Hard Knocks with the Atlanta Falcons was a first in the show’s history as we’re taken inside the operating room to witness rookie linebacker Marquis Spruill’s ACL surgery.

Last night’s premiere of Hard Knocks with the Atlanta Falcons was a doozy. After just one episode, I’m now convinced bringing the cameras to training camp was a good decision.

The show on its own is brilliant as it’s always nice to get a behind-the-scenes look at an NFL team’s training camp. Of course, Hard Knocks’ brilliance was amplified by the fact it’s featuring the Falcons.

Don’t let the 41-28 final score fool you.

With the 27-13 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, any playoff hopes for the Atlanta Falcons look several million miles away.

The score wasn’t nearly indicative as to how one-sided this game really was.

The Atlanta Falcons look to notch their first road win as they head out west to face the Arizona Cardinals.

The Falcons (2-4)  rode Harry Douglas, who had to step into the role as the top target with Julio Jones being out for the season and Roddy White nursing ankle and hamstring injuries, and Matt Ryan to victory last week over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Atlanta Falcons’ 31-23 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers ended a three-game skid, including two consecutive home losses.

The Falcons had to lean heavily on Matt Ryan, and with wide receivers Julio Jones and Roddy White ailing, it was up to Harry Douglas to take on the role as the number one option in the passing game.

The Atlanta Falcons, last season’s reigning NFC South champions, have struggled mightily this season. As have the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have yet to win a game.

Coming off their bye week, the Falcons look to right the ship beginning with a win against the Buccaneers.

The Atlanta Falcons were unable to spoil New Orleans head coach Sean Payton’s welcome back party, as the Saints held on to beat the Falcons 23-17 in the Mercedez-Benz Superdome.

Matt Ryan drove the Falcons (0-1) down to the Saints’ three-yard line in the final three minutes, but the Falcons were unable to score.

Preseason Week 1: Falcons Get Rolled by Bengals

In what seems to be a common theme in preseason for the current regime, the Atlanta Falcons were blown out 34-10 by the Cincinnati Bengals in the Georgia Dome.

Before I delve into the positives and negatives of the game, let’s address two points:

1) It’s only preseason. Last preseason, the Falcons went 1-3 and finished the regular season with a 13-3 record and a trip to the NFC Championship Game.

2) The Falcons rarely win in preseason. It’s the status quo.

Also of note: Julio Jones and Sean Weatherspoon both sat out. Jones is nursing a sore hamstring and Weatherspoon has a badly disclocated finger.

Atlanta and the Screen Game

Dirk Koetter's screen game is a welcome addition to Atlanta's offense.

Dirk Koetter’s screen game is a welcome addition to Atlanta’s offense.

One of the main reasons the Atlanta Falcons hired offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter was his usage of the screen game. Former offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey, who is now the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, rarely used the screen pass during his tenure in Atlanta.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, Matt Ryan completed 62 of 69 screen passes for 495 yards and a league-high six touchdowns.

Last season, the quarterback completed 16 screen passes for a paltry 68 yards with no touchdowns. In fact, the last time Ryan threw a touchdown on a screen pass was in 2009.

As it stands now, the screen game is essentially an extension of the run game.

Mularkey’s aversion to implementing the screen game was a bit confusing; when you have several players – Harry Douglas, Julio Jones, Jacquizz Rodgers, and Roddy White – who can make moves in space and get up field quickly, why would you not take advantage of that and put the ball in their hands?

Luckily, Koetter will be in Atlanta for at least two more years.
