Falcons Release Polite, Re-sign Cox

The Atlanta Falcons have released fullback Lousaka Polite and re-signed Mike Cox to be the new fullback.

Polite was signed after Bradie Ewing tore his ACL in the preseason. Ewing was drafted in the fifth round (157th overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Wisconsin, and he was expected to compete for the starting role.

Cox was released during the final round of cuts in the preseason. He signed with the team in October of last season after former fullback Ovie Mughelli went down with a knee injury.

Memo to Matt Ryan: Never Pass to Joe Hawley Again

With Lousaka Polite injured, running back Jason Snelling and backup center Joe Hawley have been taking snaps at fullback.

It’s okay to throw Hawley in the fullback spot for extra beef in a heavy package.

It is, however, NOT okay to actually pass to Hawley. On his first target, the backup center hit the ball in the air as if he were digging a volleyball. The Falcons were fortunate the ball wasn’t intercepted.

To make matters worse, Ryan targeted Hawley again later in the game. This time, the ball just went through Hawley’s hands.

There are ALWAYS better receiving options than a center. Always.

Ryan: Hawley should never be a viable checkdown option, ever. Dirk Koetter: rip that play out of your playbook.

With Polite out, Jason Snelling will be inserted into the fullback role. Tommy Gallarda will take Palmer’s place.

Preseason Observations Week 2: Falcons vs. Bengals

The Atlanta Falcons came up short 24-19 against the Cincinnati Bengals Thursday night. This loss marks the Falcons’ sixth consecutive preseason loss dating back to last preseason.

Continuing the theme from last game, the Falcons (offensive) starters looked great, and the backups looked not-so-great.

Falcons Sign TE Chase Coffman and FB Lousaka Polite

The Falcons have signed tight end Chase Coffman and fullback Lousaka Polite on Saturday.

Coffman, a Missouri product, was selected in the third round (98th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals. He spent last season the Bengals practice squad. Coffman has totaled three receptions for 30 yards while appearing in six games, all in 2010. In the 2009, he suffered a season-ending ankle injury. While at Missouri, Coffman set an NCAA record for most catches by a tight end at 247. In 2008, he won the John Mackey Award for being the nation’s best tight end.

Polite played his college football at Pittsburgh. He was an undrafted free agent following the 2004 NFL Draft and was signed by the Dallas Cowboys. He spent a total three seasons with the Cowboys. Polite had a short five-game stint with the Chicago Bears in 2007 before spending the next three years with the Miami Dolphins. He appeared in one game with the New England Patriots last year. For his career, Polite has 95 rushing attempts for 296 yards and a touchdown to go along with 41 receptions for 233 yards and one touchdown.

The Falcons have also officially placed rookie fullback Bradie Ewing on injured reserve. Ewing tore his ACL on a special teams play versus the Baltimore Ravens Thursday night.

The team also waived tight end Adam Nissley and punter Dawson Zimmerman.
