Falcons’ return home spoiled by Browns in 26-24 defeat

Despite the loss, the Falcons are miraculously still in first place in the NFC South. (Brynn Anderson)

Despite the loss, the Falcons are miraculously still in first place in the NFC South. (Brynn Anderson)

I took more time than usual to put this recap together because I couldn’t figure out what to say about this Atlanta Falcons team.

And it’s not as if there’s a shortage of things to say. Any unflattering adjective fits the bill.

The Current State of the 2-3 Atlanta Falcons

It’s gut check time for the Falcons. (Seth Wenig)

We’re only entering Week 6 of the 2014 NFL season and while there is plenty of football left to be played, there are glaring issues with the Atlanta Falcons that prompt questions as to whether or not this team will advance to the postseason.

Another episode of Hard Knocks means we’re that much closer to the regular season.

The first few minutes of the third episode of Hard Knocks with the Atlanta Falcons was a first in the show’s history as we’re taken inside the operating room to witness rookie linebacker Marquis Spruill’s ACL surgery.

Hard Knocks with the Atlanta Falcons: Episode 1 Recap

Last night’s premiere of Hard Knocks with the Atlanta Falcons was a doozy. After just one episode, I’m now convinced bringing the cameras to training camp was a good decision.

The show on its own is brilliant as it’s always nice to get a behind-the-scenes look at an NFL team’s training camp. Of course, Hard Knocks’ brilliance was amplified by the fact it’s featuring the Falcons.

Steven Jackson Out Indefinitely With Hamstring Injury

Atlanta Falcons running back Steven Jackson is out indefinitely with a hamstring injury, head coach Mike Smith said.

The good news is Jackson should be available for Week 1 of the regular season. Also, it’s apparently not the same hamstring Jackson injured last season.

The bad news is Jackson, at 31 years old,  is injured again.

With linebacker Sean Weatherspoon out for the season and now this, it’s not the greatest of starts to the season.

And more silver lining: the Falcons will get a closer look at rookie Devonta Freeman.

Here’s to a speedy recovery for Jackson.

Falcons Extend Smith, Dimitroff, McKay

The extensions reiterate Arthur Blank's support in Mike Smith and Thomas Dimitroff. (Paul Abell)

The extensions reiterate Arthur Blank’s support in Mike Smith and Thomas Dimitroff. (Paul Abell)

The Atlanta Falcons have extended the contracts of head coach Mike Smith, general manager Thomas Dimitroff, and CEO Rich McKay.

Smith and Dimitroff both received one-year extensions, and McKay received a four-year extension that keeps him with the team until 2019.

Smith’s contract was up after 2014. This extension gives him a chance to quickly turn the Falcons around from last season’s 4-12 campaign. Both owner Arthur Blank and Dimitroff stood behind Smith, and the extension is a (sort of) reflection of that.

Granted, if the Falcons turn in another dismal season, the Falcons head coach who has led the team to a 60-36 record over the past six seasons could be shown the door.

Atlanta Falcons vs. New England Patriots Preview

The Falcons will need another big day from Osi Umenyiora. (Wilfredo Lee)

Another big day from Osi Umenyiora will help the Falcons immensely. (Wilfredo Lee)

The Atlanta Falcons have to learn how to finish games. In each of the three games this season, the Falcons have held a double-digit lead. In two of those games, including last week against the Miami Dolphins, the Falcons lost.

And thus, the team sits at 1-2, and is preparing to face a 3-0 New England Patriots team.

Falcons Blow Lead, Lose 27-23 to Dolphins

Osi Umenyiora's chipped in with two sacks, but it wasn't enough to defeat the Miami Dolphins. (Wilfredo Lee)

In what has been a common denominator for the past five games dating back to the postseason, the Atlanta Falcons allowed an opponent back into the game after jumping out to a double-digit lead.

The Falcons fell 27-23 to the Miami Dolphins after going up 10-0 and later leading 20-10.

With several Atlanta Falcons being forced to leave the game with injuries, it was up to Julio Jones and Matt Ryan to lead the team to victory over the St. Louis Rams.

Jones matched a career-high in yards with 182 – a total he matched in last season’s NFC Championship game – on 11 receptions, including an 81-yard touchdown; Ryan threw for 374 yards and two touchdowns on 31/41 passing.

The Atlanta Falcons look to avoid their first 0-2 start since 2007 as they play hosts to the St. Louis Rams in the Georgia Dome.

Atlanta looks to rebound after losing last week’s season opener to the New Orleans Saints. Under head coach Mike Smith, the Falcons are 20-3 in games after a loss.
