Last night’s premiere of Hard Knocks with the Atlanta Falcons was a doozy. After just one episode, I’m now convinced bringing the cameras to training camp was a good decision.

The show on its own is brilliant as it’s always nice to get a behind-the-scenes look at an NFL team’s training camp. Of course, Hard Knocks’ brilliance was amplified by the fact it’s featuring the Falcons.

Atlanta Falcons running back Steven Jackson is out indefinitely with a hamstring injury, head coach Mike Smith said.

The good news is Jackson should be available for Week 1 of the regular season. Also, it’s apparently not the same hamstring Jackson injured last season.

The bad news is Jackson, at 31 years old,  is injured again.

With linebacker Sean Weatherspoon out for the season and now this, it’s not the greatest of starts to the season.

And more silver lining: the Falcons will get a closer look at rookie Devonta Freeman.

Here’s to a speedy recovery for Jackson.

RB Jason Snelling to Retire

The Atlanta Falcons have announced running back Jason Snelling will retire.

Snelling was selected by the Falcons in the seventh round (244th overall) of the 2007 NFL Draft. During his seven-year career, he totaled 1,256 rushing yards, 1,033 receiving yards, and 14 touchdowns (8 rushing, 6 receiving).

Last season, Snelling carried the ball 44 times for 164 yards and a touchdown. In the passing game, he caught 29 passes for 216 yards and three touchdowns.

Snelling saw the most action in 2009 after Michael Turner was injured. During that season, he had 142 carries for 613 yards and four touchdowns, adding 30 receptions for 259 yards and one touchdown.

What made Snelling valuable was his versatility: he could play both fullback with running back. He was the ultimate team guy, sticking with the Falcons even after they drafted Jacquizz Rodgers in 2011 and signed Steven Jackson last season.

With the 27-13 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, any playoff hopes for the Atlanta Falcons look several million miles away.

The score wasn’t nearly indicative as to how one-sided this game really was.

The Atlanta Falcons look to notch their first road win as they head out west to face the Arizona Cardinals.

The Falcons (2-4)  rode Harry Douglas, who had to step into the role as the top target with Julio Jones being out for the season and Roddy White nursing ankle and hamstring injuries, and Matt Ryan to victory last week over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Roddy White to Miss First NFL Game; Baker, Jackson Ruled Out

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White will miss the first game of his NFL career as he was ruled out for Sunday’s game versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

White’s streak of 133 consecutive games is third in franchise history behind centers Todd McClure (144) and Jeff Van Note (155).

The receiver was hampered by a high ankle sprain suffered in preseason but still managed to start despite being limited. White also injured his hamstring in Week 5’s loss to the New York Jets.

Running back Steven Jackson is still dealing with a hamstring injury suffered in Week 2 versus the St. Louis Rams.

Left tackle Sam Baker won’t dress for Sunday’s game, either. Both he and tight end Chase Coffman, who was ruled out as well, are suffering from knee injuries.

Expect Matt Ryan to lean heavily on Tony Gonzalez in Sunday’s game.

The Atlanta Falcons, last season’s reigning NFC South champions, have struggled mightily this season. As have the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who have yet to win a game.

Coming off their bye week, the Falcons look to right the ship beginning with a win against the Buccaneers.

Baker, Dent, Jackson Ruled Out For Jets Game

The Atlanta Falcons have ruled out three starters for Monday night’s game versus the New York Jets.

Left tackle Sam Baker (knee), middle linebacker Akeem Dent (ankle), and running back Steven Jackson (hamstring) will all miss the game.

Second-year player Lamar Holmes, who lost his starting right tackle spot to Jeremy Trueblood, will start at left tackle for Baker.

Omar Gaither, who was signed just three weeks ago, will fill in for Dent.

As has been the case since Jackson was injured in Week 2, Jacquizz Rodgers and Jason Snelling will look to fill the running back void.

Luckily, the Falcons have the bye week after Monday night’s game, so there’s a chance to get healthy for the rest of the season.

In what has been a common denominator for the past five games dating back to the postseason, the Atlanta Falcons allowed an opponent back into the game after jumping out to a double-digit lead.

The Falcons fell 27-23 to the Miami Dolphins after going up 10-0 and later leading 20-10.
